The Monthly ‘State of the Union’: High-Level Family Planning

While the Sunday Prep (Article 9) handles the “Tactics” of the coming week, and the Partner Check-In (Article 61) handles the “Emotional Maintenance,” the Monthly State of the Union (SOTU) is where you handle the Strategy of the family.

In the Family OS, we treat the family as an evolving organization. If you don’t step back once a month to look at the “Big Picture,” you will find yourselves drifting away from your Family Mission Statement (Article 64). The SOTU is the time to audit your systems, check your finances, and plan your “Recovery Blocks.” This guide provides the operational protocol for the monthly SOTU.

I. The “Off-Site” Requirement

You cannot plan a strategy while you are folding socks or listening for the monitor.

  • The Protocol: This meeting must happen outside the home (a coffee shop, a walk, a quiet park) or in a child-free environment where you can focus for 60-90 minutes.
  • The Vibe: This is a “Leadership Meeting.” Bring a laptop or a notebook. No phones except for calendar syncing.

II. The SOTU Agenda

1. System Audit

“Is our morning routine still working? Is the laundry flow (Pillar 1) failing? What needs a system update?”

2. Financial Review

“How are we tracking against our ForLifeWealth goals? Do we need to adjust our spending blocks?”

3. The Recovery Plan

“When is our next ‘Solo Day’? When is our next ‘Date Night’? Let’s put them on the master calendar now.”

4. Individual Wins

“What is one thing you’re proud of this month in your parenting or your personal work?”

III. The “Domain Transfer” Check

Audit the Domains of Ownership (Article 38/60).

  • The Protocol: “Is anyone feeling at 100% capacity (Article 24)? Do we need to rotate a domain from one partner to the other for the next 30 days?”

IV. Scripts for SOTU Alignment

To your partner (Invitation):

“I’m feeling like we’re just treading water lately. Can we schedule our State of the Union for next Sunday morning? I’ll book the sitter. I want us to get aligned on the summer schedule and our budget.”

During the meeting (When a system is failing):

“I’ve noticed we’re both snapping during dinner prep. That’s a system failure (Article 21). Let’s rethink the ‘Meal Rotation’ (Article 3) for next month so we aren’t so stressed.”

V. Integration with the Family OS

  • Time & Energy (Pillar 5): The SOTU is the primary tool for preventing Burnout (Article 39). It allows you to “Pace” the family system.
  • Communication (Pillar 4): This meeting prevents the “Micro-Resentments” (Article 63) from building up into a crisis.
